Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex Steam Tunnel Repairs

As a registered design professional for the Department of General Services, CJL Engineering was awarded the design contract for this project. We provided mechanical, electrical, civil and structural engineering and design services for the repairs of the existing Capitol Complex Steam Tunnel. The repairs included several areas that are spalling, cracking, crumbling and leaking ground water in the tunnel. The scope of the project was to repair all the damaged areas in the concrete structure, remove abandoned piping, investigate and repair the hollow areas of the floor. Also included was the prevention of future damage by adding additional structural support as necessary.

West Virginia State Office Building – Capitol Complex in Charleston, WV

The West Virginia State Office Building #3 is a 235,000 sq. ft. 10-story limestone- faced structure that is part of the Capitol Complex in Charleston, WV. Built in the early 1950’s the structure houses a number of different state offices. The building required a comprehensive retrofit and upgrade of all Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Systems. Following its architectural and engineering retrofit, the building achieved LEED® Certification.

National Cancer Institute at Fort Detrick

The National Cancer Institute at Fort Detrick requested an evaluation of technical and financial requirements and the development of a master plan for the potential upgrade of two existing cooling plants. CJL Engineering via its Frederick, Maryland office evaluated the technical feasibility, construct ability issues, potential design approach, additional energy efficiency opportunities, and project phasing to reduce disruption of services, and developed preliminary cost estimates for various alternatives

Afghanistan Border Police Battalion

CJL Engineering partnered with Michael Baker Corporation on fast-track redevelopment strategies in Afghanistan. These projects include standard designs for border patrol stations used throughout the country. Each compound has 22 to 24 buildings that include barracks, an administration building, kitchen / laundry, ammunition storage, a medical clinic and a guard tower. Lighting design including site lighting, general building lighting, explosion-proof fixtures in classified areas. Power for the compounds is provided by a combination of primary and standby generators. Full site distribution utilizes underground feeds and panelboards in each building.

Stryker Brigade Readiness Centers

The Pennsylvania National Guard’s Stryker Brigade program includes 10 new readiness centers. CJL Engineering was selected to provide the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering design for three facilities: Bradford, Hermitage, and Punxsutawney. The projects are being designed to achieve the National Guard Bureau’s Sustainable Project Rating Tool (SPiRiT) Gold Rating standard (a U.S. Military sustainability standard comparable to LEED®).
