UPMC Mercy Pavilion

The UPMC Mercy Pavilion is the first of UPMC’s new state of the art specialty hospitals to be built in Pittsburgh. The 410,000 SF project broke ground in March 2019 and construction was completed in 2023. CJL Engineering provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering and design services for this new specialty hospital.

FNB Financial Center, Lower Hill District

CJL Engineering designed the mechanical and electrical systems for the new 24-story, $200 million FNB Financial Center. The sustainable mixed-use project will contain over 387,000 SF of Class A office space, over 20,000 SF of multi-level retail space and a two-story parking structure. The green space adjacent to FNB Financial Center also will be named The Plaza at FNB Financial Center, where the Company plans to host various community events. Upon opening, FNB will occupy more than 160,000 SF of office space with additional options to expand to accommodate future growth, and nearly 2,000 SF of street level retail space which will be occupied by a state-of-the-art FNB technology branch.

Our expertise in healthcare engineering including central plants and system planning for hospitals allowed CJL to skillfully design the mechanical and electrical systems for this new 300,000 SF Hospital. The new 9-story, full-service hospital houses operating rooms, emergency department, cardiac catheterization lab, GI lab, PICU beds, private NICU rooms, acute care, postpartum, compounding pharmacy, full radiology suite, LDRP, clinics, oncology floors – infusion, epilepsy monitoring unit, central sterile processing, offices and building support, and a space for enhanced research. The 10th Floor hosts the Family Resource Center, a unique space for family therapy and gathering.

Duke LifePoint Healthcare – Conemaugh Ebensburg Outpatient Center

Our extensive knowledge of medical office buildings and the specific MEP/FP needs associated with them allowed CJL to skillfully design the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems for this new Outpatient Center.

This 41,505 SF, one-story outpatient center includes building includes primary and specialty care services, along with lab, X-ray, computed tomography scanning and other diagnostics, along with Conemaugh’s corporate care and MedWELL urgent care centers. Physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy services occupy a large area of the building that includes a therapy fitness center. There is also a community room. Conemaugh Ebensburg features a women’s diagnostic center with ultrasound, 3-D digital mammography and bone density testing. The dedicated suite allows women to receive all diagnostics in one area without traveling between departments.

CJL Engineering designed the mechanical and electrical systems for the mixed-use sports complex that is the official practice space of the Pittsburgh Penguins®. The new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex is the official practice space of the Pittsburgh Penguins®,the local NHL franchise.

This new 185,000 sq. ft., $70 million facility is comprised of 54,000 sq. ft of clinical space, a Sports Medicine Clinic with 24 private patient rooms, a physical therapy gym overlooking the Penguins practice rink, Aquatic Therapy, on-site MRI and X-Ray imaging, two NHL-size (85 ft. x 200 ft.) hockey rinks with approximately 1,500 seats, 14 locker rooms, a hockey skills training area with a RapidShot system, and a dedicated sports performance space, including a sprinting track and batting cages. The facility also features a Café and retail space. The complex opened in August 2015.

Allegheny Health Network, St. Vincent Hospital Master Plan

The comprehensive Master Plan and Implementation Strategy for St. Vincent Hospital was developed by CJL Engineering. The Master Plan includes, renovations to the existing nursing units, a new 120,000 sf. infill building addition which includes the emergency department, pre-admission testing and MRI renovations and upgrades to the existing facility infrastructure.

Carnegie Music Hall – Air-Conditioning of Historic Concert Hall

Built in 1895, Carnegie Music Hall and adjacent historic Foyer is flanked by the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie Museum of Art in the heart of the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. CJL Engineering was hired by the Museum to conduct a Heating/Cooling Plant Master Plan to develop an approach for the upgrade of the 3,000-ton Chilled Water System. As an added scope, the Museum requested that CJL investigate and then design the incorporation of air-conditioning (AC) into the 120 year-old Carnegie Music Hall. The original heating and ventilating system including fans and ductwork all dated back to the original construction.

Given its original layout and the fact that the Museum generated its own power and heating, at that time there was little regard for the cost of heating. As such, both the Music Hall and Foyer were set up as a 100 percent outside air systems. This arrangement had been the stumbling block in numerous previous attempts at adding AC capability to the Music Hall. CJL was brought in to engineer a creative solution in support of a comprehensive interior upgrades. This year long restoration of the beautiful hall both increases accessibility and enhances the experience of attendees. This revamp ensures future generations can enjoy all the space has to offer year-round and into the future.

Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex Steam Tunnel Repairs

As a registered design professional for the Department of General Services, CJL Engineering was awarded the design contract for this project. We provided mechanical, electrical, civil and structural engineering and design services for the repairs of the existing Capitol Complex Steam Tunnel. The repairs included several areas that are spalling, cracking, crumbling and leaking ground water in the tunnel. The scope of the project was to repair all the damaged areas in the concrete structure, remove abandoned piping, investigate and repair the hollow areas of the floor. Also included was the prevention of future damage by adding additional structural support as necessary.

New Canon-McMillan Middle School

CJL Engineering designed the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems for the new 214,183 SF middle school. The facility is designed to accommodate around 1,050 students in grades 7 and 8. The three-story facility includes, Classroom Wings on all three floors, a Central Office, School Office, Kitchen/Cafeteria, Gym, Music, Auditorium, Art, Library, Tech Ed rooms and a full size athletic field with full field lighting.

Saint Francis University – Saint Margaret Hall

CJL Engineering designed the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection systems in the building and also provided site/civil design for the exterior. This project consisted of fully renovating the St. Francis University’s Boiler House Building and St. Joseph’s Hall. The buildings were connected and turned into a single renovated building to support the Occupational Therapy program and included Physician’s Assistant classrooms. A second floor was added to the Boiler House and a connection bridge was provided between Padua Hall and St. Joseph’s Hall.

CJL Engineering designed the lighting concept to light the upper and lower perimeter terrace spaces with handrail post mounted miniature cut off fixtures, to provide non uniform light patterns on the terrace deck. The University of Pittsburgh Rooftop Terrace located on the Fourth floor of the University Club is a unique gathering space with spectacular views of the University. The rooftop terrace is used for receptions, charity events, weddings, and other social events. There is a main terrace level with tables and seating with a continuous decorative handrail separating the upper terrace from the lower perimeter terrace space. There is a second handrail at the edge of the roof with additional tables and seating in this lower space for leisure and dining.

Winner: American Architecture Award, Bridges & Infrastructure 2020 and IES Illumination Award of Merit 2020

CJL Engineering was contracted to do the lighting design of a new pedestrian bridge in Providence, RI on the existing piers from the I-195 relocation project. The bridge connects Brown University to downtown Providence and has spurred commercial redevelopment and revitalization of the surrounding community. The challenge was to create a safe, welcoming environment with lighting fixtures integrated into the bridge architecture, and within budget constraints, energy code allowances, and dark sky compliance.

The 120-year-old Carnegie Museum of Natural History, a National Historic Landmark Building in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Oakland section, housed an outdated and inefficient chilled water system capable of failure at any time. CJL Engineering was hired to conduct a Heating/Cooling Plant Energy Master Plan to develop an approach for the upgrade of the Chilled Water System. CJL provided a replacement design for the two 39 year-old chillers using new energy efficient equipment, and later did the commissioning on this facility.

Winner: IES Illumination Award of Merit 2020

CJL Engineering was contracted to do the lighting design of the Roxian Theatre in Pittsburgh. The project involved the renovation of a vaudeville theatre that sat vacant for 16 years before it was revitalized and transformed into a live music venue, blending original architectural detailing with new state-of-the-art systems. The 32,000 square-foot renovated venue serves as a beacon to the community, jump-starting a broader local revitalization of the surrounding areas. This project won a 2020 IES Illumination Award of Merit.

CJL Engineering was contracted to provide the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection consulting engineering for the One on Centre High Rise Building, a new, 17-story development built on Centre Avenue between North Dithridge and North Craig streets, in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. The mixed-use building, renamed One on Centre, has 336 apartment units, more than 400 parking spaces, and several street level retail stores.

The Edge

CJL Engineering was contracted to provide mechanical, plumbing, electrical and fire protection consulting engineering services. The Edge is one of the new high-rises in downtown State College located one block away from the Pennsylvania State University campus. This 110,000 SF mixed-use facility offers 40 four-bedroom apartments to lease or own. There is 10,000 SF of office space, a structured parking garage that holds 55 spaces and 4,000 SF of retail along the sidewalk. This project achieved LEED^® Gold certification.

CJL Engineering was contracted to provided the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, site/civil and structural design for a new 16,650 SF addition and renovation to the existing Dale Oxygen building located in Johnstown, PA. The Design/Build project included new fill plant, receiving area, acetylene dock, customer dock, offices, conference room, janitor closet, and toilet rooms. The renovated areas included wet gas, break room, storage, offices, sales, open office, demo and support rooms. The project was completed in 2020.

CJL Engineering designed the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems for this tenant fit-out project. This project involved the 140,000 SF fit-out of two full and two partial floors for Buchanan, Ingersoll & Rooney’s (BIR) headquarters in Pittsburgh’s historic Union Trust Building. Completed in 1917, the Union Trust Building was once known as the Union Arcade. In 2014, nearly 100 years later, the building shell was carefully renovated to highlight its Flemish-Gothic details, stained-glass windows and 10-story open Atrium. The BIR fit-out captures the spirit of the Atrium immediately upon walking into the Main Reception, through the clever use of LED light panels mimicking the atrium ceiling.

CJL Engineering was contracted to provide a forensic evaluation of the Trine University, Thunder Ice Arena. In particular, the evaluation focused on the reported problems with the HVAC and rink refrigeration systems performance as well as very high utility bills. The new 46,200 sf., 700-seat Thunder Ice Arena is located on the campus of Trine University. The arena includes an NCAA-compliant ice rink, club and visitor’s lockers, weight and training rooms, concessions, a pro shop, a VIP lounge and press box. This arena is home for the men’s and women’s hockey teams of Trine University.

White Township Recreation Complex, S&T Bank Arena

CJL Engineering provided full engineering design for a replacement ice sheet at the S&T Bank Arena, located at the White Township Recreation Complex. The retrofit was installed within a standard regulation 200 ft. ice arena. The facility offers a variety of community based programs and services including public ice skating, ice skating lessons, learn to Play hockey lessons, and many more. The facility houses a turf arena, full ice arena, batting cage, and meeting/party rooms. Indiana Youth Hockey Association, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, The Indiana Ice Minks, Kiski Prep, Indiana Area Soccer Boosters and The Indiana Lacrosse Club.

CJL Engineering provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering services as well as commissioning services for a 50,000 sf. Medical Office Building (MOB) addition to the Akron Children’s Hospital Beeghly Campus. The new MOB addition connects directly to the existing campus hospital. The addition includes a new central utility plant that back feeds chilled water, heating hot water and providing power to more than half of the existing campus. It also includes a Data Center that serves as an off-site mirror for the main data center.

Forum Health, Northside Medical Center Master Plan

The comprehensive master plan and implementation for Forum Health’s Northside Medical Center includes: a new 100,000 sf. ‘Heart Hospital’ expansion, an upgraded chilled water plant, boiler plant and electrical on-site generation, HVAC systems, plumbing and electrical systems, plus a new 547-vehicle parking garage. CJL upgraded the systems to meet the Medical Center’s demand and increased the plant’s efficiency by 17 %.

CJL Engineering provided LEED® commissioning services for the design, construction, and warranty phases, and enhanced commissioning for the Frick Environmental Center (FEC), a net-zero energy and water facility in Pittsburgh’s Frick Park. The shared project between the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and the City of Pittsburgh received the Living Building Challenge (LBC) Certification, the world’s most rigorous proven performance standard, by the International Living Future Institute. The FEC is the first Living Building in the U.S. that is municipally owned and free and open to the public. The building was also named LEED Platinum in November 2017.

CMU’s Hamerschlag Hall Makerspace

Hamerschlag Hall anchors the main quadrangle on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) occupies the building that serves 450 undergraduate and 300 graduate students. CJL Engineering was hired to implement upgrades to HH-1107, the Undergraduate Computer Cluster and Distance Learning Lab. The firm has also provided upgraded ventilation and improvements to faculty offices throughout the building.

CJL Engineering was contracted as the Professional Engineering Consultant to design and specify the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems for this new $15 million-dollar, 40,000 sf facility. The Clarion County YMCA triples the size of the old facility, and includes a pool, a full-size gymnasium, an indoor track, a wellness center, a weight room, multiple purpose rooms, and locker facilities for men, women and families. The new YMCA also includes a family warm water pool providing lap lanes, recreation, exercise, swimming lessons, aqua aerobics, and other activities.

This new plant is designed to serve the chilled water, steam and emergency power requirements of UPMC Mercy Hospital. CJL Engineering’s design solutions included:

Chilled Water – 5500 tons operating capacity with another 2750 tons of stand-by capacity.

Steam – 100,000 LBS / HR operating capacity with another 50,000 lbs / HR of stand-by capacity. Steam pressure is at 150 PSIG

Emergency Generators – 5 MW operating capacity with another 2.5 MW of stand-by capacity.

Design of the chilled water lines sizes for 30-inch HDPE (high density polyethylene) to exiting plant and 24-inch HDPE after the split.

Experience with the Energy Center Pittsburgh – Uptown project includes underground vaults associated with the steam installation as well. Vaults included both precast and poured in place installations.

The Energy Center Pittsburgh – Uptown project was a design-build effort with collaboration coordination and review with all stakeholders. Piping and conduit placement review and coordination continued throughout construction to assure that design objectives were met while avoiding underground obstacles, including those which had not been detected by earlier discovery methods. This effort served the project very well, particularly at the massively congested crossings of Forbes and Fifth Avenues.

Winner: U.S. Green Building Council of Central PA – “Rise to the Challenge” Award 2018

CJL Engineering provided the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing design for the newly opened home for the humanities at the center of the Bucknell University campus. The hall is the result of a yearlong, nearly $8-million renovation and expansion project of a building that for decades played home to the Delta Upsilon fraternity. The construction project added a new wing to the 1941 structure and increased interior space by almost 50 percent while also making the building ADA compliant. The design includes a number of sustainability features and is expected to receive a LEED® Silver rating.

Des Places Hall is a 12-story, LEED Gold, all-suite high rise residence that accommodates 430 students. It sits atop a 49-acre urban campus that dominates a plateau that overlooks Downtown Pittsburgh. CJL Engineering design solutions included mechanical and electrical systems design for energy efficiency and sustainability, fire detection/suppression systems, 10 Kw PV system on roof, LED light fixtures for decorative cove/rope lighting and exterior site lighting, a 4-pipe console fan coil unit and central 100% outside air ventilation system, and a floor by floor metering system with display for energy usage awareness.

Scaife Hall – Neurology Research Lab

CJL Engineering provided Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Engineering services for Scaife Hall 5A, a renovated 13,000 sq. ft. Neurology Research Laboratory. The project is a collaborative initiative between UPMC Presbyterian Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh. The existing animal laboratory was completely gutted, and a new neurology research laboratory installed that includes more than 500 linear feet of usable lab counters, 10 fume exhaust hoods, and several tissue culture rooms. A critical BSL2 Lab for infectious disease control as well as for the avoidance of contaminating tissue samples was also designed for the new laboratory space.

The Chevron Science Center, originally built in 1974, is a 15 story, 200,000 sq. ft facility at the center of the University of Pittsburgh campus. Over the years, many lab areas, and pieces of equipment had been added to the Science Center. These additions had outstripped the original HVAC systems’ capabilities to provide adequate ventilation to insure proper equipment and system operation. CJL Engineering provided the design of significant HVAC upgrades for this landmark scientific tower.

The world famous Culinary Institute of America contracted directly with CJL Engineering as the Prime Professional to evaluate and provide their school with a “long term” view of their facilities and to act as the owner’s representative to identify Energy Conservation Measures (ECM’s) and to develop an RFP for ESCO Contractors to bid. CJL Engineering provided energy modeling calculations and Return-On-Investment (ROI) data to help the owner decide on the most effective and efficient path to take to mitigate current and future energy costs. Gross construction costs were estimated to be $8-$10 million.

Hunt Library is an anchor building on the main quadrangle of Carnegie Mellon University. CJL Engineering was hired to design façade lighting to accent the aluminum architectural columns around the perimeter of the building. The building façade is lit with programmable color-changing LED fixtures, allowing the façade lighting to be customized for special events and seasons. The LED fixtures are normally programmed to produce a cool blue color to accent the building’s aluminum fins. Shown here is Christmas season lighting. CJL Engineering design solutions included:

Dulles International Airport, located just outside Washington, D.C., is one of the fastest growing international airports on the East Coast. Dulles serves over 15 million passengers per year with more than 4 million of those passengers on international flights. CJL Engineering design solutions for Dulles’ APM Station in Terminal B included integral custom continuous fluorescent escalator lighting, indirect concourse and platform level lighting, custom luminous vertical panels at Mezzanine, column grazing uplights.

CJL Engineering designed a full Cafeteria and Dining Hall Renovation / Retrofit for the Robertson Café, located on the campus of the University of Akron. A traditional 1970’s-style cafeteria with a separated kitchen, serving line and traditional bench seating was totally updated to a contemporary dining environment.

The project was awarded an International Illumination Award from IES (Illuminating Engineering Society) for its innovative and decorative lighting design.

The University Store on Fifth is a retail establishment and bookstore for the University of Pittsburgh. The exterior lighting design for the store features historic sconces and LED accent lighting for the entrance columns. The interior lighting design shown here includes volumetric fixtures for general lighting, along with LED track lighting, accent lighting, and recessed multiples to highlight the retail merchandise. Decorative LED sconces on columns and pendants at counters and seating areas further enhance the space. The University Store on Fifth was awarded an Electric League 2014 Outstanding Lighting Award.

The Pittsburgh High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) is a vertically functional and visually exciting educational facility in the city’s Cultural District. The school’s exterior redefines many of the visual elements used in the Bitz Building, a nine-story Beaux Arts style building that adjoins CAPA. Philanthropist François Bitz donated the actual building site; six floors of his creatively retrofit building are structurally connected to the school and used for additional classroom and studio space. CJL’s electrical engineering design included lighting systems for the classrooms, studios, cafeteria, corridors, lobbies, auditorium and gymnasium power distribution system with emergency back-up fire alarm, security, and public address systems, a Panasonic Astrovision screen (30 feet high and 21 feet wide) that faces Ft. Duquesne Boulevard at the 9th Street Bridge, showcasing the best creative work of the CAPA High School students.

The Upper St. Clair School District in Pittsburgh, PA has embarked on a $22 million renovation of Fort Couch Middle School. A portion of the existing structure is being demolished and reconfigured, and the school will be significantly expanded. The American College of Sophia (campus building & infrastructure) dates to its original construction period in the 1920’s. The campus was occupied by the USSR from 1945 to 1991. In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the school undertook a complete renovation of the Campus Centre, a new library, student and learning centers, new cafeteria and numerous other teaching facilities. CJL Engineering was engaged to create a Master Plan to separate State and private water distribution systems, a master plan for campus-wide electrical systems upgrade and present options for the rebuild of the central heating plan and campus geothermal.

The Katz Café is the result of the basement retrofit of Mervis Hall at the University of Pittsburgh. CJL Engineering designed the Mechanical and Electrical Systems for this Starbucks-like coffee bar and Internet café. Mervis Hall houses the Katz Graduate School of Business. CJL’s design solutions included abundant use of down lighting and low-voltage track lighting with dimming features – augmented by fluorescent lighting. Power provided to equipment and to data network areas, a wireless Internet receiver, as well as data outlets. Existing HVAC was modified and retrofit to café application, and load requirements.

West Virginia University transformed its historic 54,000 sq. ft. Oglebay Hall into a state-of-the-art forensics laboratory and classroom building. Dating from 1916, the new 74,000 sq. ft. building includes DNA and molecular biology laboratories, electron microscopy, bone analysis, blood, fingerprint, and trace evidence analysis facilities. CJL’s design solutions included high performance window glazing system for beneficial daylight for reduction of thermal losses and solar heat gain.;Lighting systems that adjust to daylight levels and automatically dim and shut off, saving energy; HVAC systems providing exceptional indoor air quality and energy efficient performance. This 1903-era classroom and faculty office building is accentuated by its famous portico. The structure originally housed the Carnegie Women’s College, which was later melded into Carnegie Mellon University in 1973. CJL Engineering’s solutions included mechanical and electrical infrastructure upgrades and renovations to portions of the building including classrooms, lecture room, dance studios, art room, design studios, dark room, photo lab, corridors and other spaces.

The Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University is a new 100,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art building that connects the downtown business community to the local campus. A LEED Platinum certified building, the Phipps Conservatory developed the Center for Sustainable Landscapes mandating net-zero energy, waste, and water usage. It is a landmark building that produces as much energy from renewable resources as it uses from the grid on an annual basis. It will also capture, treat and recycle wastewater and rainwater onsite.

The new 30,000 sq. ft. Tier 3 primary Data Center for BJC Healthcare, St. Louis, MO is located on an existing hospital developed as a green healthcare facility in accordance with LEED® criteria. The Data Center and all future buildings will be built with high performance sustainable design principles, creating an “integrated” green site. CJL’s design incorporates high density heat containment approach to minimize cooling energy requirements and maximize environmental data equipment power and cooling loads. The West Virginia State Office Building #3 is a 235,000 sq. ft. 10-story limestone- faced structure that is part of the Capitol Complex in Charleston, WV. CJL Engineering partnered with Michael Baker Corporation on fast-track redevelopment strategies in Afghanistan. These projects include standard designs for border patrol stations used throughout the country. Each compound has 22 to 24 buildings that include barracks, an administration building, kitchen / laundry, ammunition storage, a medical clinic and a guard tower. Lighting design including site lighting, general building lighting, explosion-proof fixtures in classified areas. Power for the compounds is provided by a combination of primary and standby generators. Full site distribution utilizes underground feeds and panelboards in each building.

The Pennsylvania National Guard’s Stryker Brigade program includes 10 new readiness centers. The restoration and adaptive retrofit of the historic Fulton Building provides the location for both the Byham Theatre and the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel. The 1,300-seat Byham Theatre, a totally restored performance hall which originally opened on Halloween, 1904 as the Gayety Vaudeville Theatre. The building’s hotel component has 300 luxury guest rooms, a business center, meeting rooms, wine bar, cocktail bar and restaurant. CJL Engineering designed the replacement of the entire building’s electrical systems including service entrance, switchgear, theatrical lighting / control, audio / visual system, fire alarm system, telecommunication data system and historical lobby renovation. Plumbing systems included new domestic water service assembly, domestic water heating, roof drainage and sanitary / vent system.

The Benedum Center for the Performing Arts is the premier multi-purpose venue in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. Built in 1927 as the Stanley Theater, the 2,800-seat hall is home to four of Pittsburgh’s opera and dance companies, and hosts a diverse range of touring productions. CJL Engineering provided new chillers, cooling towers, controls, pumps and associated electrical infrastructure. The new plant has two 275-ton centrifugal electric chillers; one 175-ton electrical screw compressor chiller, two-285-ton cooling towers, three VFD pumps, all new piping and chemical feed tanks and 2 refrigeration leak exhaust systems.

CJL Engineering provided the professional mechanical and electrical consulting services for Water’s Edge, an innovative new exhibit at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.

Water’s Edge, a LEED Compliant project, was designed for polar bears, sea otters, and walruses. Each aquatic species has its own indoor holding facility and outdoor pool. A vegetative green roof was installed over the building for aesthetics, as well as additional insulation. There are more than 450,000 gallons of chilled seawater in the outdoor pools, maintained between 50-55 degrees Fahrenheit. Water’s Edge opened in November 2006, and was featured on CNN.

This 73,000 sq. ft. aluminum and glass building is the United States headquarters for Union Switch and Signal, a subsidiary of Ansaldo Signal, The three-story building houses the corporate offices and the R&D division. Located at the Pittsburgh Technology Center the building is designed to take full advantage of the site’s natural locale, including public plazas, tree-lined river access paths and a river walk. CJL Engineering was engaged to provide an electrical service design with UPS, a fire alarm system, base building lighting and site lighting, telephone and data risers.

Jones Day is an international law firm with over 2,300 lawyers and thirty offices worldwide. The 68,450 sq. ft. Pittsburgh office is located at One Mellon Center, a 54-story, 1.7 million sq. ft. commercial office tower situated in the financial district of Pittsburgh. Design includes private offices, workrooms, training / conference rooms, document storage, administrative support, law library, technology and communication rooms, pantry / servery and restrooms. CJL Engineering Design Solutions included power and technology distribution, client-specific HVAC design for private offices, supplemental cooling for large conference areas and technology rooms, architectural lighting design, Life Safety System design, base building MEP infrastructure modifications to meet Jones Day requirements, commissioning of MEP systems, and LEED® construction inspection services.

Union Trust Building

Built in 1916 by Industrialist Henry Clay Frick as the Union Arcade, and now known as the Union Trust Building, this 517,376 sq. ft., 11-story structure is one of the most recognizable architectural landmarks in Downtown Pittsburgh. This Grant Street building once featured 240 shops and 700 offices, all configured around a circular center atrium. Its new owners, Boston-based, The Davis Companies, embarked on a $25 million renovation / retrofit that restored the building into a preeminent Class A address and marketed toward High Technology tenants. CJL Engineering was contracted to implement and design a comprehensive Mechanical, Electrical, IT and Plumbing retrofit. The team of The Davis Companies, Mascaro, Perfido Weiskopf, Clista and CJL Engineering won the Engineering Society of Western Pennsylvania’s Commercial Project of the Year for 2017. In May 2019, the Union Trust Building officially attained LEED Silver Certification.

The 1905 Fulton Building is now the site the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel. This 14-story building with a copper-clad roof was originally designed by Architect, Grosvenor Atterbury and is one of the architectural treasures of Pittsburgh’s “Cultural District”. The hotel has 300 upscale guest rooms and restaurant, plus 10,000 Sq. Ft. of meeting room space. A restored dome dominates the meticulously restored white marble lobby. The structure also houses the 1,300-seat Byham Theatre, a totally restored performance hall dating from 1904. CJL’s design solutions included the retrofit design of all electrical systems and service for the building. The systems included special lighting for the lobby, meeting rooms, guest rooms, dimming, data / telecom, fitness center, kitchen, restaurant and public areas.

CJL Engineering provided the Electrical Engineering design for Chateau Lafayette, a five-story, 124-room luxury hotel located at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. In addition to its European amenities, the Chateau Lafayette features a grand marble-clad reception area, the Lautrec Restaurant, the 8,700 sq. ft. Marquis Ballroom and upscale shops, all of which received unique specialty lighting applications. CJL provided the comprehensive electrical component of the hotel construction including lobby areas, guest rooms, office areas, restaurants, a kitchen. The design included all voice / data / security and point-of-sale communication systems, as well as the coordination of specialty lighting and sound systems.

The NAS Oceana Child Development Center is a 29,000 sq. ft LEED® Silver facility. The complex includes Child Development Home (CDH) lending space, training and curriculum office, five infant activity rooms, four pre-toddler activity rooms, four toddler activity rooms, six pre-school rooms, kitchen, laundry, an entrance/lobby, reception and work areas, restrooms and mechanical and communication rooms. CJL provided high performance peer review incorporating energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality(IEQ), and resource conservation in accordance with the USBGC LEED® green building ratings.

Akron Thermal, the district energy provider for the City of Akron, Ohio, located in center-city Akron, a new 1,000-Ton steam absorption chiller, and a 1,000-Ton cooling tower, doubling the city’s chilling capacity. CJL’s Structural Engineering Design included new concrete floor and building shell expansion to support the new chiller, associated pumps and controls. Increased electrical capacity supports the new chiller pumps and cooling tower fan motors.

CJL Engineering provided the mechanical and electrical engineering design for the 5,100-ton upper campus chilled water plant for the University of Pittsburgh. The massive 7,000 sq. ft. plant is 30 feet high, and houses three 900-ton and two 1200-ton chillers.

A primary, secondary pumping system utilizes a water pump for each chiller, and three secondary pumps with variable speed drives. The total capacity of the pumping system is 8,160 gpm designed for a 15 degree F. delta T.
Underground 20” chilled water piping, along with 12” high-pressure steam, 6” pump discharge, and 2” high-pressure return, were installed in a common 10’ side trench. The steam system consisted of over 1,000 ft. of high-pressure and six steam vaults.

The Cambria County War Memorial Arena is a 4,000-seat multi-purpose sports and exhibition facility. In a recent expansion and renovation, the arena gained central air-conditioning, new seating, improved public access, and ADA Compliance.

The new chilled water plant has two – 300-Ton chillers, and also serves the adjacent Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center. Central station air-handling units and a 4-pipe heating and cooling system serve the HVAC needs of the building. Rink refrigeration: low temperature ice building chiller, evaporative condenser, Ethylene Glycol pumps for rink piping, and redundant compressor/pumping arrangement.
