Saint Francis University – Saint Margaret Hall

CJL Engineering designed the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection systems in the building and also provided site/civil design for the exterior. This project consisted of fully renovating the St. Francis University’s Boiler House Building and St. Joseph’s Hall. The buildings were connected and turned into a single renovated building to support the Occupational Therapy program and included Physician’s Assistant classrooms. A second floor was added to the Boiler House and a connection bridge was provided between Padua Hall and St. Joseph’s Hall.

University Club Rooftop Terrace at University of Pittsburgh

CJL Engineering designed the lighting concept to light the upper and lower perimeter terrace spaces with handrail post mounted miniature cut off fixtures, to provide non uniform light patterns on the terrace deck. The University of Pittsburgh Rooftop Terrace located on the Fourth floor of the University Club is a unique gathering space with spectacular views of the University. The rooftop terrace is used for receptions, charity events, weddings, and other social events. There is a main terrace level with tables and seating with a continuous decorative handrail separating the upper terrace from the lower perimeter terrace space. There is a second handrail at the edge of the roof with additional tables and seating in this lower space for leisure and dining.

CMU Baker Hall Adamson Wing

CJL Engineering was contracted to provide Carnegie Mellon University mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection consulting engineering services for the renovation to the Baker Hall, Adamson Wing. The Adamson Wing in Baker Hall consists of classrooms and computer labs. These University classrooms offer resident audio and visual technology. The technology found in these classrooms include: single or dual displays, document cameras, Blue-ray players touch panels, input connection for laptop/mobile devices and video conferencing.

CMU’s Hamerschlag Hall Makerspace

Hamerschlag Hall anchors the main quadrangle on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) occupies the building that serves 450 undergraduate and 300 graduate students. CJL Engineering was hired to implement upgrades to HH-1107, the Undergraduate Computer Cluster and Distance Learning Lab. The firm has also provided upgraded ventilation and improvements to faculty offices throughout the building.

Hildreth-Mirza Center for the Humanities at Bucknell University

Winner: U.S. Green Building Council of Central PA – “Rise to the Challenge” Award 2018

CJL Engineering provided the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing design for the newly opened home for the humanities at the center of the Bucknell University campus. The hall is the result of a yearlong, nearly $8-million renovation and expansion project of a building that for decades played home to the Delta Upsilon fraternity. The construction project added a new wing to the 1941 structure and increased interior space by almost 50 percent while also making the building ADA compliant. The design includes a number of sustainability features and is expected to receive a LEED® Silver rating.

Des Places Hall at Duquesne University

Des Places Hall is a 12-story, LEED Gold, all-suite high rise residence that accommodates 430 students. It sits atop a 49-acre urban campus that dominates a plateau that overlooks Downtown Pittsburgh. CJL Engineering design solutions included mechanical and electrical systems design for energy efficiency and sustainability, fire detection/suppression systems, 10 Kw PV system on roof, LED light fixtures for decorative cove/rope lighting and exterior site lighting, a 4-pipe console fan coil unit and central 100% outside air ventilation system, and a floor by floor metering system with display for energy usage awareness.

University Bookstore at University of Pittsburgh

The University Store on Fifth is a retail establishment and bookstore for the University of Pittsburgh. The exterior lighting design for the store features historic sconces and LED accent lighting for the entrance columns. The interior lighting design shown here includes volumetric fixtures for general lighting, along with LED track lighting, accent lighting, and recessed multiples to highlight the retail merchandise. Decorative LED sconces on columns and pendants at counters and seating areas further enhance the space. The University Store on Fifth was awarded an Electric League 2014 Outstanding Lighting Award.

Point Park University Dance Studio

Lawrence Hall is a 21-story tower in Downtown Pittsburgh, the anchor structure of the Point Park University urban campus. This project included a new 54,000 sq. ft. dance studio complex, central cooling plant, steam boiler plant, and significant mechanical and electrical modernization for the historic 300,000 sq. ft. structure. CJL Engineering provided HVAC, electrical, lighting, information technologies, plumbing, and fire protection, as well as green/LEED® engineering services.

American College of Sofia, Bulgaria

The American College of Sophia (campus building & infrastructure) dates to its original construction period in the 1920’s. The campus was occupied by the USSR from 1945 to 1991. In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the school undertook a complete renovation of the Campus Centre, a new library, student and learning centers, new cafeteria and numerous other teaching facilities. CJL Engineering was engaged to create a Master Plan to separate State and private water distribution systems, a master plan for campus-wide electrical systems upgrade and present options for the rebuild of the central heating plan and campus geothermal.

The Katz Café is the result of the basement retrofit of Mervis Hall at the University of Pittsburgh. CJL Engineering designed the Mechanical and Electrical Systems for this Starbucks-like coffee bar and Internet café. Mervis Hall houses the Katz Graduate School of Business. CJL’s design solutions included abundant use of down lighting and low-voltage track lighting with dimming features – augmented by fluorescent lighting. Power provided to equipment and to data network areas, a wireless Internet receiver, as well as data outlets. Existing HVAC was modified and retrofit to café application, and load requirements.

WVU Oglebay – LEED Certified

West Virginia University transformed its historic 54,000 sq. ft. Oglebay Hall into a state-of-the-art forensics laboratory and classroom building. Dating from 1916, the new 74,000 sq. ft. building includes DNA and molecular biology laboratories, electron microscopy, bone analysis, blood, fingerprint, and trace evidence analysis facilities. CJL’s design solutions included high performance window glazing system for beneficial daylight for reduction of thermal losses and solar heat gain.;Lighting systems that adjust to daylight levels and automatically dim and shut off, saving energy; HVAC systems providing exceptional indoor air quality and energy efficient performance. The project was designed for and achieved LEED® certification.

Catherdral of Learning – University of Pittsburgh

The Cathedral of Learning is a historic landmark in Pittsburgh, recognized as the second-tallest education building in the world – at 42-stories, it rises to 535 feet in height encompasses 600,000 Sq. Ft. of space. This imposing Gothic revival tower is also the geographic and traditional heart of the University of Pittsburgh. This infrastructure upgrade involved the replacement of and redesign of the Mechanical Systems serving the 200’s wing lecture rooms.

Carnegie Mellon – Margaret Morrison Hall

Margaret Morrison Hall is a landmark structure on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University. Now the home of the Carnegie Mellon College of Fine Arts, School of Design, the structure was named after Andrew Carnegie’s mother. This 1903-era classroom and faculty office building is accentuated by its famous portico. The structure originally housed the Carnegie Women’s College, which was later melded into Carnegie Mellon University in 1973. CJL Engineering’s solutions included mechanical and electrical infrastructure upgrades and renovations to portions of the building including classrooms, lecture room, dance studios, art room, design studios, dark room, photo lab, corridors and other spaces.
Youngstown State University – Williamson College of Business Administration

Youngstown State University – Williamson College of Business Administration

The Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University is a new 100,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art building that connects the downtown business community to the local campus. The $30 million building was designed to achieve LEED® Gold Certification. The facility incorporates high tech learning spaces, community outreach centers, business hubs, and administrative areas within a two block area. CJL designed and specified complete HVAC distribution systems, incorporating LEED Design into the building design, and provided construction administration for all MEP systems.
